Some of us are reluctant to get involved while others need to learn how to take a backseat. I am the later. My endless opinions and ‘fix it nature’ draw me all sorts of places constantly.
I want to do it all, be everywhere, do everything. Even when I am ‘running my race’ I can’t help but wonder if I should try out the other lane- just for a bit, or maybe at the same time. Some of you will relate to this while others prefer to sit on the starting block or sidelines and just observe.
It is a week into our meander through Romans 12 and the journey so far is seeming to take a fairly consequential route; each verse builds on the others. Really we cannot isolate this one verse, it’s right in the middle of a sentence- it really does need context.
For those just reading today perhaps it would be worth catching up and reading on with us to capture the full weight of what is being expressed.
The journey has led us through surrender and dependence on Jesus, then in humility and contentment as we join with the rest of the body to contribute the gift that God has entrusted us with.
Then today we arrive at verse 7 which makes contributing our gift so simple:
‘if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;’ Romans 12:7 (NIV)
If it was my paraphrase, it would read:
‘contribute you gift and mind your business’ Romans 12:7 (Carly’s paraphrase)
Ha! I am joking about my version but perhaps that is what I need to hear right now? Carly- offer your gift then mind your business and keep it simple!
Fleshed out to me it would read: bring your gift, bring it to the best of your ability, in unity, but don’t fuss around in areas that you don’t need to. Relax! Go with the flow, trust God!
Oh goodness we can create drama out of nothing sometimes.
This verse keeps it simple.
This post is simple.
What’s your gift, are you using it?
Then mind your business.
