Defining clear roles and responsibilities
Everyone loves to know what it takes to do a good job.
At some point whether before people join a team or later down the track as a team grows most teams get to a point where roles need to be clearly outlined so that people aren’t crossing over and doubling up or missing things all together. It is well worth the time to sit down and clearly identify how the team will function together.
- Dream slightly ahead of where you are at now— what would the ideal situation look like? How many people would it take to pull it off. If you dream too big at this stage the stretch is too great. You want just enough stretch that people can see “Oh if we had a few more people this team would function much more effectively.”
- Write down all of the roles and what they would entail. How do they work together? What type of person would you need to function well in the role?
- Share these roles with the team and ask what they think. Where could they see themselves fitting? For a season they may need to fill a specific spot until the team grows but communication is key here.
